A Brief History of Development

    The firing history of Rongchang Pottery dates back to the Han Dynasty. It had already developed to a considerable scale in the Song Dynasty and reached its heyday during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. During the Qianlong Reign of the Qing Dynasty, the fine pottery produced by "Anfu Kiln" was renowned across Southwest China and was sold far to Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan and even Southeast Asia.

    During the Republic of China era, Rongchang pottery artisans made innovations based on traditional vessel shapes and introduced decorative techniques such as carving, picking and painting. From the 1950s to the 1980s, state-owned pottery factories rose, ushering Rongchang Pottery into the era of industrialized production. After the 21st century, with the rise of intangible cultural heritage protection and the cultural and creative industry, Rongchang Pottery has embraced a new round of development opportunities.

Craft characteristics

The core craft features of Rongchang Pottery can be summed up as "red as jujube, smooth as jade, sonorous as chime, thin as paper". Its representative techniques include:

· Slip Decoration: Apply a layer of white slip on the body, then carve patterns or paint, to present distinct layered decorative effects after firing;

· Carving and Picking: Use knives instead of brushes on semi-dry bodies to carve flowers, figures and geometric patterns;

· Underglaze Painting: Paint on the unglazed body with mineral pigments, then cover with transparent glaze and fire at high temperature, so the colors remain fresh and lasting;

· Wood-firing Technique: Use firewood as fuel, flames and ashes leave natural kiln transformations on the body, forming unique effects such as "fire marks" and "ash deposits".
